On this week’s episode of Reset, Renew, Revive, I am joined by two guests -- Krystyna Houser, founder of The Good Life wellness brand, and Dr. Ali Rezaie, medical doctor and professor at Cedar Sinai Hospital who specializes in microbiome research.
Krystyna suffered from a mysterious gut condition that caused brain fog, bloating and rashes. It took two years before a doctor diagnosed it correctly as SIBO, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.
SIBO is a dislocation of your colon bacteria that have crept back into your small bowel. So when you eat food that goes into the small bowel, instead of digesting and absorbing it, some of it is absorbed by overgrown bacteria in the small bowel, which produces a lot of side products including gas, brain fog and bloating.
The microbiome that exists in the large and small bowels is very complex. Often the answer to SIBO and IBS is a restrictive diet, but that can severely limit someone in their social or professional life. It’s ultimately not sustainable.
She met up with Dr. Rezaie in LA who uses a holistic and integrative approach to health. Dr. Rezaie specializes in the treatment of SIBO and IBS, irritable bowel syndrome. So I was 170 pounds dropped down to about 140 pounds. Wasn't absorbing nutrients. Well, even though I was trying to work out, I was trying to eat a lot. You know, I was eating like six meals a day, you know, the personal trainer diet. And that was when I discovered a book called the maker's diet by Jordan Rubin

My goal is I'm going to drink this gallon before noon and by drinking continuously like that it's suppressed any sort of hunger and actually felt really energized. And then all of a sudden I got ravenous, nobody eats like two meals and like a five-hour eating window, but I had never heard the term intermittent fasting, but that's exactly what I was doing.

You need a certain amount of insulin, for example, to activate T4 to T3 to activate your thyroid hormone.
You need it to help produce and have free estrogens, free progesterone, and free testosterone. So if you're on a calorie-restricted diet for a long period of time, and especially on a low carb calorie, restricted diet, you are going to suppress the production of these hormones and you're not going to feel good.

why do I still weigh the same? But that's also because of miscommunication is. Is wrong between your brain and your fat cells and, the body thinks you're starving. So your body's going to hold on to that. So I'm so glad you brought that up and also glad you brought up, you know, adapting to dietary changes because.Highly neglected in our society

So sometimes for some people, especially if you've noticed in the past that you just don't feel as good eating meat, eating, eating more fats, you might just tighten your amount up. Right? So you might focus on a lot of bitter herbs, parsley, cilantro, drinking ginger tea, and doing ginger radishes, right.
Things like that. That will all be bitter. We say bitter is good for the liver. Right. So bitter really helps stimulate bile flow. So consuming more of those in your day.

So I get out and I just ground my body for about five or 10 minutes and that's time to, I just move around.
I pray kind of just really focus on just being grateful, right. And starting my day, with just the right mindset. And while I'm grounded, you know, Ana oil, pulling some stacking, all these colleagues, principles and stretching and. Yeah. So that's typically how I'll start, you know, and then I'll come in, I'll make some herbal tea and, uh, take some supplements and then I'll sit down and read some of the Bible.

[3’ 25] Right before my 25th birthday. I found a lump in my right. It was during my surgery rotation, which is ironic because obviously breast cancer, surgeons, and surgery. And I did not think anything of it. I kind of ignored it. I was so busy, but at the insistence of my husband at the time I got it checked out. And within two weeks I had a biopsy and had a diagnosis of aggressive breast cancer, highest grade, you know, worst kind of cells you could have.
[6’ 24] And this is one of the things we'll talk about today that I think is so important for your listeners is intuition, right? We are born with this intuition and as medical doctors, some of our most powerful healing comes from listening to the internal voice that says, no, this isn't right.

Honestly, if you've been in the trenches, um, not only because you did conventional medical training, we know how that is, you know, but then being a patient on the other end and dealing with the conventional medicine medical system and realizing, wow, there's gotta be another way like that.

[5’06] Here's the thing, when I say evidence-based, we have to keep in mind, there are multiple definitions of evidence-based. The best literature that we currently have, but also what's so important is it takes into account the clinical experience and expertise of that practitioner. I mean, it's become a cliche, follow the science. Well, we know evidence means there's some literature.
[9’58] I'm going to see what's in front of me and pivot and adapt and decide how I'm going to live right now and really using the evidence that we have at hand, knowing that, and this is a hard part, but knowing that the evidence might change tomorrow, but we can, we just have to do the best that we can.
[18’24] Here's the thing, And I always go back to, what does, what does supporting the immune system mean for you as a parent? For some parents, it means never getting sick. It means my kids are never going to get an illness that unfortunately is not the way to build your child's immune system. We need our immune muscles, we need it.

I have teenage boys who are very athletic, very lean, very muscular. Their metabolisms because they are still growing are very different. And someone north of 35, and I have to remind people the way we eat in our twenties and thirties is much different as we start getting older.
[9’16] Really is what I see people looking inflamed, they're obese, they're metabolically inflexible. And so I feel like it's really a public health threat that if we don't as a nation, start changing the way that we view our relationship with food and the way that we, live our lives, we are going to become an increasingly unhealthy population of individuals.
[11’04] 16 to 8Hours is a good starting point and that really represents 16 hours fast. So with an 8-hour feeding window, And like I mentioned, some people may need to start with 12 hours and slowly increase to 13 and 14. Understand that Some individuals may become, more metabolically flexible at a sooner point in time, two to three weeks versus six to eight.
